두 개의 기둥과 일곱 개의 글자

미래에 대한 궁금증이 유독 강해지는 12월, 서울시립미술관은 데이터와 통계수치에 의존하는 현대사회를 미학적으로 재조명하는 자리를 마련했다. <두 개의 기둥과 일곱 개의 글자>는 우리에게 노출되어 있는 기정의 정보들을 넘어 보이지 않는 이면에 위치한 데이터의 유의미성을 탐구해보는 전시다. 전시 제목은 사주팔자(네 개의 기둥과 여덟 개의 글자)의 표피적 프레임에 미술관의 특성을 담아 서술한 것이다. 사주팔자의 획일적 프레임인 여덟 개의 칸으로 수십만 인구를 분석하고자 하는 의도적 논리를 비평적 관점으로 해석하고자 했다. 특히 부동산 가격, 재구매율, 주가 변동 추이, 비트코인, 점성술, 명리학 등 현대에서 관심을 높게 끄는 수치 자원 모두가 축적된 데이터와 통계를 근간으로 삼고 있으며 위 모든 요소가 제한된 표본과 목적성 내에서만 유효함에도 불구하고 맹목적으로 따르는 사회를 제고할 기회를 마련하고자 하는 것이 이 전시의 궁극적인 목표다. 명제화된 전시 제목과 공간의 표면을 넘어 작품으로 들어서는 순간 우리를 둘러싼 정보들의 휘발성을 체감할 수 있다. 전시장을 유영하며 시각, 촉각, 청각으로 변환된 데이터의 파편을 마주하면서 우리가 직시해야 할 정보의 본질적 요소들을 상상해볼 시간을 가지기를 제안한다. 전시 기간 동안에는 관람객에게 각 작품의 이미지를 담은 책갈피가 제공된다. 이는 흘러내리는 정보의 홍수에 편승하지 않고 잠깐 멈춤으로써 무의미할지도 모르는 수치적 기준에서 탈피할 것을 독려하는 작은 선물이다.
Two Pillars and Seven Letters

In December, a month when people are most sensitive to prediction, the Seoul Museum of Art has arranged a forum to esthetically shed light on contemporary society which tends to rely heavily on data and statistical figures. Two Pillars and Seven Letters is an art exhibition that explores the nature and significance of the data that exists behind their appearance, moving beyond already exposed and determined snippets of information. The exhibit title is a description of the SeMA’s hallmarks based on the superficial frame of saju palja (literally meaning “the four pillars and eight characters” or four pillars representing the year, month, day, and hour of one’s birth). The exhibition has interpreted the intentional logic of saju palja which are used to tell the fortune of hundreds of thousands of people as a weak point of typical data in our society. The ultimate goal of this exhibition is to reconsider contemporary society in which numeric information that draws keen attention (i.e. real estate prices, repurchase rates, and fluctuation of stock prices or bitcoin), fields such as astrology, and the four pillars of destiny are all predicated upon accumulated data and statistical figures which are only valid in limited cases and for certain purposes. We may get a feel for the volatility of information the moment we encounter a work of art, going beyond the exhibit title and the surface of space. You are advised to take time to imagine the underlying elements you have to face when viewing pieces of data which have been converted into the senses of sight, touch, and hearing at the venue.
A bookmark featuring an image of each work will be offered to viewers during the exhibit period. This is a small gift to encourage them to break away from meaningless, numerical values and criterion so as not to become trapped in a deluge of information.
