일렁이는 그리드에서 태어난 새로운 형태의 모듈

New modules born from a rippling grid

추미림의 작품이 도시에서 나고 자라서, 인터넷에서 정보를 취하고 새로운 시각문화를 받아들이는 일에 매우 익숙한 ‘아스팔트 키드’가 그려내는 이 시대의 풍경화라고 볼 수는 없을까 자문해본다. 인디자인과 같은 디자인 툴을 켜면 흰 화면이 나온다. 그 바탕에는 일정한 간격으로 ‘그리드’라 불리는 가상의 안내선이 배치되어 있다. 작가뿐 아니라 디자이너로도 활동을 이어오고 있는 추미림이기에, 그에게 그리드는 떼려야 뗄 수 없는, 삶을 규정하는 하나의 방식과도 같은 것일 테다. 전시 제목 <일렁이는 그리드에서 태어난 새로운 형태의 모듈>에서 알 수 있듯이, 작가는 그리드를 고정된 벽이 아니라 유동적이고 변형 가능한 것으로 보고 수면위의 물결이 흔들리듯 일렁인다고 쓰고 있으며, 그 가운데 새로운 형태의 모듈이 탄생했다고 기술했다.

Chu was born and raised in city, accustomed to be receiving updated information from internet. She is an ‘Asphalt Kid’ in that sense. It may be possible to say that what she depicts is the landscape of digitalized world. When starting the design program like InDesign, one can see ‘Grid’ which is “a network of lines that cross each other to form a series of squares or rectangles”. Because Chu works also as a designer, Grid is an inevitable way of life for her. Shown from the exhibition title “New Modules Born from a Rippling Grid”, one can infer that she sees grid not as something solid, but flexible. Like surface of water, it keeps on wavering.
